Erin Harris

Erin & Scott by Duane PeckHi, my name is Erin, it’s nice to meet you! I am a wife and a mom of a talkative 2 year old daughter. I love all things healthy, and I love all things about communication. And putting the two together brings me an unusual amount of joy.

But before I tell you about me, let’s talk about you. You are constantly on the go and often struggle to find work-life balance. Health is very important to you, but you sometimes neglect your own health to take care of others; your kids or an ill parent (or both at the same time). Or, perhaps you do take time for yourself, but feel guilty while doing it. Maybe you have a spouse who you wish you had more time to see, yet often end up putting this relationship to the side for more pressing family or work obligations. You are a caregiver looking for ways to improve your and your family’s health.

If this describes you, then you’ve come to the right place.

I created Healthy Communicator to serve people who are looking for ways to better their health and relationships through improved communication. I give you the tools to deal with sick family members, doctors who don’t listen, and friends who don’t understand why you are so “uptight” about your child’s illness, all while getting more time to take care of yourself too.

I received my M.A. in Communication Studies from Cal State Long Beach in 2009 and my M.S. in Health and Strategic Communication from Chapman University in 2015.

For the past 9 years I have been teaching college courses, including interpersonal, small group, and business communication, as well as public speaking and forensics (no, not CSI forensics, speech and debate team forensics), where I coached students to write and present competitive speeches at regional and national tournaments.

I am also the current assistant editor of the academic journal, Communication Reports, where I review and edit new and interesting research papers from scholars in the field.

Finally, shortly after starting this blog in 2015, I became pregnant, and like most, my life changed in drastic ways; overall for the better. This experience exposed me to a new realm of patient provider communication with doctors, midwives, and pediatricians. Becoming a mom has guided me to do research to help new parents communicate their health needs (e.g., breastfeeding and pumping, etc.) with managers and coworkers when re-entering the workforce.

Now my goal is to share my knowledge with you.

If you’re dying to know more, here are 5 things you don’t know about me:

  1. We had a Beatles themed wedding.
  2. I had a natural childbirth (no meds) and used Hypnobabies to do so.
  3. My favorite book series is Harry Potter. (Scott and I went to the Warner Bros. movie set museum in London, and it’s secretly my favorite part of our trip).
  4. I danced ballet for 11 years growing up.
  5. In my high school physics class, we had to make a boat out of sticks and paper sturdy enough to hold us as we paddled across the school pool without sinking. We named it N(ot) Sync after the boy-band.

If you’re reading this, then I’m curious; who are you?? I’d love to know more about you too!

Learn with me, right this second, by joining my newsletter so you can get my weekly post right to your inbox. As a “thank you,” I will also send you my free doctor appointment checklist, which will help you save time and stay organized before every visit.

Thank you so much for stopping by, and here’s to a healthier, happier you!
